Polo visited Hagnzhou in 1280,and he was taken aback by
Hangzhou's natural beauty. You will be, too.
195 km southeast of
Shanghai, Hangzhou lies at the south end of the historic Grand
Canal and the lower reaches of the Qiangtang River. Vegetation
here is lush and verdant and the weather is notably mild. As one of the six ancient capital cities in
China, Hangzhou is also a city with a great number of cultural
relics and heritage sites.
West
Lake
Mountains with luxuriant trees and flowers surround Hangzhou's
West Lake. Ancient pavilions, terraces, and gardens-within-
gardens have been built on its islets. Amidst the stone
pagodas and teahouses, temples, caves and hidden springs
within the lake, you'll feel as though you are a figure in a
traditional Chinese painting.
Linyin Temple
The Lingyin Monastery was built in 326 AD, and still stands there. The
monastery enshrines a 32-metre wood-carved Buddha, and an
underground series of caves decorated with Buddhist carvings.
Shaoxing
Located 64 km from Hanghzou, Shanoxing is another famous
cultural city. It was the capital city of the State of Yue
from 770 to 476 B.C.. Lakes are scattered all over the city and
covered boats travel along the crisscross river. Points of
interest include Lan Pavilion, Tomb of Dayu and the Lu Xun
Museum.
